Auckland Kendo Club 25th Year Anniversary

The Auckland Kendo Club celebrated 25 years as New Zealand’s oldest and largest Kendo club at an action packed ceremony at their dojo headquarters in Panmure on Saturday 29th November. The club was honoured to have the Consul- General Mr. Kazutoshi Inadome and his wife and the Vice- Consul Mr. Kyohei Tanaka present at this event. Several sensei from other NZ Kendo dojos were present as well as a large number of past and present members and friends of the Auckland Kendo Club.

The event featured an audio visual presentation of highlights of the club’s 25 year history, including an address from the club’s Patron Yoshihiko Inouye sensei and congratulatory messages from many overseas kendoka connected to the club. There were also demonstrations of Kendo kata, Ji geiko and Iaido by club members as well as taiko drumming by the Tamashii Taiko group who are also housed at the Pilkington road Dojo.

Lifetime achievement awards were presented by the Consul- General to the 4 founding members, Graham Sayer, Ken Wells, Brent Hansen and Alan Stephenson. After the formal ceremony there was a celebration dinner at a local restaurant where many past victories, disappointments, challenges, and personal growth experiences were re-lived by the members both past and present.
